Leavitt Cemetery Investigation

Icon Guide
Location

Located in Charlemont Massachusetts on the Mohawk Trail (Route 2)

History/Activity

On the evening of May 6th 2006, BPG investigators Josh and Greg were traveling along the Mohawk Trail en route from a conference in the other part of the state. While traveling the dark and unlit roadways we passed some old and small cemeteries the dotted the side of the road. Having some of our investigating equipment with us in the vehicle, we thought it would be a cool idea to stop at the next cemetery we passed to see what could be found.

The next cemetery we came upon was located in the small hill town of Charlemont. Charlemont was already familiar with us due to our investigation of the near by Charlemont Inn (See case file #003). We pulled up in front of the old cemetery storage building that was dug into the ground partially and was surely used in the early years to house the deceased waiting for the ground to thaw in during the long Berkshire winters.
The sign in the front of the cemetery read "Leavitt Cemetery" and I thought it was odd how much it sounded like “leave it” cemetery. What came next was a personal experience that will never be forgotten by Greg or me. The actual personal experience I will leave as a story to be told by those involved, but it is what brought us to the cemetery five months later to investigate.

Photos

Many pictures were taken that night that include “ecto” in them. Due to the cold of the evening and are breath being visible, I will not post them as evidence. The mists in the pictures posted here are away from the camera and our breath. Many other pictures were taken that contain orbs and mists. These will be saved with my case file as possible evidence.

EVP

A Past Master Mason speaks...
  • Recorded during first EVP session.
  • I pointed out to Greg that a headstone nearby was that of a Past Master Mason.
  • You here me say “past master” and then a voice after.
  • The voice to me sounds like enthusiastic “yeah”.
  • Neither myself or Greg said this, and both agree it’s not each others voice.

A message to the living...
  • Recorded during first EVP session
  • Just prior to shutting off the recorder I ask the spirits “If you have a message you would like to give to the living please do it now”.
  • You then hear a voice or whisper.
  • This is without a doubt a Class C EVP and it is uncertain what is being said.
  • When I listen closely, I can almost hear a “night”

Conclusions

We arrived and parked in the eastern part of the cemetery which appeared to the oldest part of the cemetery due to the age and style of the stones around us. Upon exiting the car we automatically started flashing away in the night with our digital cameras at the open area and some of the awesome work of the stones that surrounded us. With the full moon above and no natural light to be found it didn’t take long for our eyes to adjust. Once they did, flashlights weren’t needed and our equipment could be seen with out any help. Once we reached the middle of the cemetery I decided to pull out my digital recorder and do the first EVP session of the night. I left it on a nearby stone and Greg did the same.

After that recording we moved on toward the western half of the cemetery and continued taking pictures. At this point I must say was starting to get disappointed in the lack of any spirits popping out from behind any headstones. But soon after that the noises started coming from all around us. Greg first pointed out to me a bush were he heard what he described as someone shaking it or hiding inside. On closer inspection of the bush revealed nothing living in or about it. Also during this time was when Greg and I both started hearing footsteps of someone walking around us or circling around the cemetery as if they we spying on us, trying to stay just out of are range of sight.

On a few occasions I would see a shadow jumping from headstone to headstone out of the corner of my eye. It would make the hair on the back of my neck stand up and Greg would inform me of seeing some of the same. While this was going on noises would start coming from the not-so-distant wood line to the north of the cemetery. At first it was just the occasional moving of the bushes or breaking of sticks on the ground. As the night went on it turned into what sounded like an axe hitting a tree but without the same frequency that a human would hit a tree. I was eager to go and investigate these noises... but the likelyhood of it being a wild animal and not wanting to meet an angry bear or some other large animal that I could not defend myself against, we thought it was safest to leave the noises be.

While now on the west side of the cemetery I found a headstone that I loved the look of and decided to place my recorder there for a second EVP session. The usual questions were asked of the spirits but during the course of this recording other things started to happen. Greg started hearing strange noises of in the distance that he could not put his finger on and even at times thought he heard human voices. I could not hear anything though except for an odd hum in my head that muffled everything around me and it felt like I was gradually going deaf. It was one of the oddest feelings I ever had and wondered is it some kind of psychic feeling I was getting even though I claim not to be psychic. At this point the night was truly getting interesting and the feeling of disappointment was now gone. The feeling I am use to having while investigating was returning. Stopping my recorder after approximately 5 minutes of recording, we stayed in this area taking a large amount of pictures and further investigated some of the weird noises that were heard.

We then continued on to the part of the cemetery where Greg’s personal experience took place for one last look for a spirit. We went over to the old dug-in storage area and posed for some pictures. I then started recording for one last EVP session and carried my recorder around with me as I asked some questions. By this time the noises in the distance were still going on. We took some more pictures of some headstones and the area where the noises and shadows were heard and seen.

By this time we were getting cold and tired and decided to make our way back to the car, hopeful that our pictures and recorders caught something. On our way home we discussed the odd sounds and sights that we experienced that night and even made a stop at the eastern portal of the Hoosac Tunnel... but that is a haunting for another day.
